    if you add 35 to twice a number, the result is 17. What is the number?

    A number is represented by a variable, let's call it "x".

    Twice a number means we multiply by 2 --> 2x

    Add 35
    2x + 35

    Now set that entire expression equal to 17
    2x + 35 = 17

    Plug that into the search engine to solve for x
    x = -9
