    vw^2+y=x for w

    This is an algebraic expression.

    Subtract y from each side:
    vw^2 + y - y = x - y

    The y's cancel on the left side, so we're left with:
    vw^2 = x - y

    Divide each side by v
    w^2 = (x - y)/v

    Take the square root of each side:
    w = Sqrt((x - y)/v)
