A gym charges a $30 sign-up fee plus $20 per month. You have a $130 gift card for the gym. When does the total spent on your gym membership exceed the amount of your gift card?

Subtract the sign up fee of $30 from your gift card amount:
    $130 - $30 = $100

Since each month costs $20, we have $100/$20 = 5 months.

So if you go for more than 5 months, you'll exceed your gift card.
