A football team gained 8 yards on a first down, lost 12 yards on the second down, and gained 16 yards on the third down. How many yards did the team gain or lose?

    Assumptions:
    • We reflect gains by adding
    • We reflect losses by subtracting
    Plays:
    • Gain of 8 = +8
    • Loss of 12 = -12
    • Gain of 16 = +16
    Net Gain/Loss
    +8 - 12 + 16
    +12 (gain)
