Enter a, b, and c below:

<-- Enter (a)
<-- Enter (b)
<-- Enter (c)

Given a = 2, b = 8, and c = 7:

Prove the Distributive Property

Distributive Property Definition:

a(b + c) = a(b) + a(c)

We read this three ways:

  1. The sum of a and b times c
  2. a times b plus c
  3. The product of a times b plus c

Plug in a = 2, b = 8, c = 7:

2(8 + 7) = 2(8) + 2(7)

We read this two ways:

  1. 8 and 7 times 2
  2. 2 times 8 plus 7

Simplifying, we get:

2(15) = 16 + 14

30 = 30
