    Let the first number equal x. The second number is 3 more than twice the first number. Express the second number in terms of the first number x.

    • Let the second number be y.
    • Twice means multiply by 2
    • 3 more than means we add 3

    So we have the following algebraic expression:
    y = 2x + 3
